The Signal Beneath the Static
Most of us spend our lives mistake the frantic chatter of the survival-wired brain for our own internal direction. When you sit in stillness, notice how the mind spins stories about what you should want or who you should be. This is not your calling. This is your nervous system scanning for threat and social belonging, an evolutionary echo designed to keep you safe rather than awake. True calling lives deeper, beneath the rapid-fire synaptic firing of the neocortex, resting in the slower, more rhythmic pulses of the heart-brain and the enteric nervous system in your gut.
To find your way, you must learn to listen to the somatic feedback loop. When you contemplate a change or a shift in your life, notice the physical texture of that thought. Fear often presents as a tightening in the solar plexus or a shallowing of the breath, a physiological contraction that mirrors the fight-flight responses defined by polyvagal theory. Intuition, by contrast, feels like a sudden softening, an expansion in the ribcage, or a quiet, steady sense of 'yes' that holds no frantic urgency.
Distinguishing these states requires you to treat your body as a precision instrument rather than a vessel for your thoughts. In contemplative traditions, this is called discernment. In quantum physics, we might view this as tuning your observation to a specific frequency amidst a field of infinite potential. You are not waiting for a bolt of lightning to strike from the heavens; you are tuning into a vibration that is already humming beneath your skin. If you cannot hear it yet, it is simply because the volume of your conditioning is turned up too high.
Start by allowing yourself to sit for five minutes without trying to solve anything. Simply notice where you are holding tension. When the noise of the mind rises, breathe into those tightened spaces and let them go. The calling you seek is not a destination at the end of a long road. It is a subtle, consistent pull towards resonance. As you stop leaning into the noise, you will find that your path is not something you have to hunt for - it is something you begin to inhabit.
